Ingredients

Scale
  • 1½ cups (188 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon (2 g) orange zest about ½ of a medium orange
  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter room temperature
  • ½ cup (100 g) light brown sugar packed
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract
  • ½ cup (84 g) mini chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup (30 g) sliced almonds plus 2 tablespoons (15g) extra for optional topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt together.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine orange zest and granulated sugar, rubbing together until the sugar feels slightly moist.
  4. Cream the softened butter and brown sugar with the orange sugar mixture until fluffy. Stir in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract, mixing well.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until just a few flour streaks remain.
  6. Fold in mini chocolate chips and sliced almonds until evenly distributed.
  7. Scoop and roll the dough into balls (around 3 tablespoons each).
  8. For added crunch, dip tops of dough balls in extra sliced almonds. For chewier cookies, chill the dough balls in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  9. Place dough balls 2 inches apart on the baking sheet and bake until edges are tan (about 8-10 minutes).
  10. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

For a softer cookie, do not overbake them; the centers should remain slightly soft when you take them out.
Ensure butter is at room temperature for easy mixing and the best texture.
Experiment with different chocolate chip varieties for unique flavors.
