  • 1 and 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • nonstick baking spray
  • 1 pound challah bread (cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 8 ounces brick-style cream cheese (cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 1 and 1/4 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 6 large eggs
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder (optional)
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar (sifted)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (plus more for serving)
  • 3 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Stir in the melted butter until just combined.
  2. Set aside to let the mixture absorb the butter and become crumbly.
  3. Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  4. Add the bread cubes to the prepared dish and set them aside.
  5. In a large bowl, mix the milk, cream, eggs, yolks, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, and espresso powder, beating until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes. Add the cream cheese cubes evenly on top.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the casserole. Cover tightly with foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit when ready to bake.
  9. Remove the casserole from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 15-30 minutes.
  10. Bake covered for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes until golden and firm in the center.
  11. Prepare the glaze by whisking the confectioners’ sugar, maple syrup, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Adjust the thickness as necessary.
  12. Drizzle the glaze and additional maple syrup over the casserole before serving.

Notes

Ensure to refrigerate the casserole overnight for best texture.
Serve with additional maple syrup for extra sweetness.
Consider adding fruit on top for added flavor and color.
